  • Anh Vongbandith works at Das Good Cafe in Germantown when her husband Anou was detained by ICE last weekend on his way to work after accepting a plea deal on a felony child abuse charge in 2010. She is rallying community support by pushing legal appeals and fundraising (over $40,000 has been raised) to overturn his case (hoping to keep him in Philadelphia).  KYW Newsradio
  • Philadelphia's Tyrese Maxey and his foundation hosted their second annual Friends and Family Weekend to raise funds for local community programs before his sixth NBA season, featuring a Night of Giving that awarded scholarships and donations plus a celebrity golf tournament and free basketball camp at William Penn Charter School. BUSINESS NEWS

  • An investigation by The Inquirer found that hemp-derived THC products sold in local stores often exceed legal potency and may contain dangerous contaminants such as mold and pesticides—9 of 10 tested products broke safety limits. The study also revealed that many items were mislabeled or tampered with, and regulators are expected to review these practices soon.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • A motorcyclist was shot and hospitalized after a Bensalem officer intervened in a Saturday road rage on Bristol Pike—he had pulled a gun and threatened a driver near Biddle Lane before his motorcycle struck the police vehicle, and no one else was injured.  KYW Newsradio

ECONOMY NEWS

  • During the FIFA Club World Cup from June 16 to July 4, Philadelphia drew 346,000 fans from all 50 states and 120 countries—including visitors from Brazil—and saw local hotel occupancy rise 18% over last year. Convention and Visitors Bureau President Gregg Caren said the event was a test run for even larger crowds expected next year for World Cup matches.  KYW Newsradio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A University of Pennsylvania researcher found that Black educators help Philadelphia students make important college and career decisions—though only 3.7% of teachers are Black while 14.5% of students are, leaving many schools without a teacher of color. Students said that having a relatable teacher gives them the confidence and support they need for academic success—an issue that highlights the need for more diversity in the classroom.  Metro Philadelphia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting today, a six‐block stretch of East Market Street in Old City's Old City will face detours and lane closures as crews build new curbs, sidewalks, ramps, a bike lane and bus stop bump outs. The project will last up to three months with westbound traffic directed to Arch Street and eastbound lanes reduced while access for local businesses and residences is maintained — temporary loading areas are arranged.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • An undocumented South Philly mother who once fled violence now worries for her safety and dignity as federal pressure mounts on sanctuary policies—she fears local law enforcement may soon test the limits of these protections. City officials promise to uphold current practices while legal challenges could bring uncertainty to the community—leaving immigrants to navigate these changes with trepidation.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
