EDUCATION NEWS

  • Philadelphia Federation of Teachers is prepared to strike if contract talks with the school district do not meet its demands before the current deal expires at the end of August. The school district said it values educators and will work to finalize a new agreement before school starts Monday, August 25 — as negotiations continue amid an unresolved state budget.  WHYY
  • More than 700 new teachers and counselors started orientation on Thursday at the School of the Future in Parkside, marking the beginning of preparations for 216 schools to welcome 117,000 students on August 25. • The Eagles defeated the Bengals 34 to 27 in their preseason win as backup quarterback Tanner McKee completed 20 of 25 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns while corners Kelee Ringo and Adoree Jackson struggled with coverage—coach Nick Sirianni said the new lineup showed promise.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • In its 20th year, the Danny Rumph Classic honors late basketball star Danny Rumph by raising funds for heart screenings and new defibrillators at local rec centers—measures that help protect young athletes. • A recent column urged that the Eagles pay for a new domed stadium without using tax dollars, and many Philadelphia readers voiced strong disapproval of public funding for a replacement to Lincoln Financial Field. The public responses suggest that residents believe essential community needs should not be compromised—funds should go to services rather than a new team facility.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • In the preseason opener against the Bengals, Eagles rookie Jihaad Campbell showed flashes of potential and learned from veteran Zack Baun while offensive guard Tyler Steen solidified his spot with a strong blocking performance (the team won 34-27). The game highlighted key roster battles as players vie for the initial 53-man team.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
