Good morning, Philadelphia. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 12th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On June 29, an explosion near Tawanda Davis’s Nicetown rowhouse shattered her windows and killed one person, forcing her to shelter her grandchildren and pay for a hotel stay while the damage was temporarily covered with plywood. Davis said her landlord boarded up the broken openings, told her to leave, and has not fixed the issue — local advocates warn that unsafe rental conditions in older homes leave tenants vulnerable.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CRIME NEWS

  • 33-year-old Javier Rivera tried to steal a BMW from a man's Kennett Township home and was confronted by the 69-year-old, so Rivera fatally stabbed him—he then stole more cars and was arrested Monday morning with a cut on his hand and dried blood on his clothing and is now held without bail in Chester County Prison.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania’s House passed a nearly $1 billion transportation funding bill on Monday that will boost SEPTA operational aid by about 25% and fund highways, with Governor Shapiro’s support—however, the measure faces an uncertain future in the Senate. SEPTA warned it will cut 20% of services starting Aug. 24, with further cuts planned for Jan. 1 and fare increases set for Sept. 1 if more aid is not provided.  WHYY
  • Former U.S. Sen. Bob Casey will join Philadelphia law firm Dilworth Paxson on September 1—he will use his state and federal expertise to advise corporate clients and begin a fellowship at the University of Scranton.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • The Pennsylvania House passed a nearly $1 billion transit funding bill on Monday at 108-95 to help SEPTA avoid deep cuts, including a $292 million aid boost—its future now depends on approval by the GOP Senate. SEPTA said it must get state funds by Aug. 14 or face 20% service cuts on Aug. 24 ahead of school start.  KYW Newsradio

HEALTH NEWS

  • In June, Philadelphia declared a three-day heat health emergency as a record heat wave claimed five lives — climate change made these extreme conditions four times more likely. In July, 84-year-old Blanca Maldonado in a North Philadelphia rowhome suffered near collapse from the heat due to a lack of air conditioning, showing the rising risks for older residents.  WHYY
