CRIME NEWS
- ➤ At 52nd and Arch, city workers, police and a community group fenced off a vacant lot that had let drug dealers run in West Philly—this move drove the dealers to leave and led to a marked drop in crime. Metro Philadelphia
- ➤ Philadelphia police say that Kyle Irvin—55—turned himself in at around 12:05 a.m. on Wednesday at the 14th District police station on Haines Street and Germantown Avenue and is in custody for the fatal shooting of his 48-year-old wife at the Germantown spa they operated together last week. - ➤ A man was killed and another was injured Tuesday night near the 600 block of Mountain Street in South Philadelphia when gunfire erupted, and officers recovered a handgun plus evidence of over 30 bullets fired; the 37-year-old victim died at Jefferson University Hospital while the 23-year-old received treatment for nonlife-threatening injuries. - ➤ Police responded Thursday to an active shooter report on Villanova University campus—students were told to lock and barricade doors while local officials ordered residents to shelter in place as emergency vehicles and officers gathered near the scene before classes began. Spotlight PA
- ➤ The district attorney’s office has asked a judge today to review Tyree Musier’s 17-year prison sentence after jail calls showed that Jonte Slater—now dead—paid a witness to say Musier killed Nathaniel Crawford on a West Philadelphia street. The Philadelphia Inquirer
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Philadelphia is set to host many cultural events this weekend as its Comedy Festival runs from Aug. 21—24. On Saturday, the Philly Bookstore Crawl, the first-ever Bald Fest at Greys Ferry Skatepark from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Pirate Day at Fort Mifflin starting at 10 a.m. will give locals fun ways to enjoy art, music, and history. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Philadelphia Parking Authority will finish installing 30 automated speed cameras along Broad Street by the end of the month, with devices placed about every mile between East Oak Lane and South Philadelphia. A 60-day grace period will follow the installation and a warning period start date is expected to be announced in early September. WHYY
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ FIFA and Philadelphia Soccer 2026 have opened volunteer registration for the World Cup 2026, which will need more than 3,000 local volunteers. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, complete eight shifts, and attend tryouts and training at the new Volunteer Center at Fashion District Philadelphia—offering uniforms, meals, and community support. - ➤ The Philly 10K will run this Sunday, Aug 24 with runners starting at 7:30 a.m. on South Street and finishing on the 500 block—road closures, detours and SEPTA bus changes may delay traffic. Race packets can be picked up Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Metro Philadelphia
