BUSINESS NEWS

  • Philadelphia sports bar Xfinity Live! will change its name to Stateside Live! this fall after a naming rights deal with Stateside Vodka—a local liquor brand that also makes Surfside Iced Teas. The venue will undergo $15 million in upgrades including an open-air beer garden that will be finished by 2026.  WHYY

CRIME NEWS

  • A 44-year-old Philadelphia man named Mark Anthony Tucci pleaded guilty to federal charges for racist, violent threats against Black city employees and a Black motorist — his sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 2.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philly Girls Jump held a double dutch jump rope event at the Art Museum steps this summer, drawing hundreds of participants + organizers plan to hold more events at other famous sites in Philly + the event shows a long-loved African American tradition.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Controller Christy Brady said an audit found that inspectors missed certifications and did not check contractors’ licenses, risking worker and resident safety. The city and L&I will add staff and conduct random visits—actions aimed at improving safe building practices.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • SEPTA will cut bus, trolley, and train service starting Sunday, Aug. 24th, and fares will rise on Sept. 1; city officials say riders should use Indego bikes, shuttles, taxis, or park-and-ride lots. Mayor Parker says the changes hurt the economy — many residents may face longer trips for work and school.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Temple University professor Caterina Roman says Philadelphia could lower youth violence and save money by using relationship-based programs instead of keeping teens in detention. The plan calls for expanding programs such as the Youth Violence Reduction Initiative using the citys IDEA system to catch risks early and provide timely support.  Metro Philadelphia

HEALTH NEWS

  • CHOP received 300 child-sized medical backpacks from the Madelyn James Pediatric Cancer Foundation—designed to hold an infusion pump, IV bag, and tubing for children with leukemia receiving at-home treatment. The backpacks are named Backpacks with Barbara in honor of late CHOP resident Barbara Friedes— and will be distributed over the next five years to support families managing treatment.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The 16th annual Philly Naked Bike Ride is today at 5 p.m., starting at Lemon Hill in Fairmount Park and covering a 12-mile route past the Divine Lorraine, City Hall, the Liberty Bell and South Street before returning to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Pre-ride festivities begin at 2 p.m.—organizers say the event promotes cycling, body positivity and fuel-smart habits while riders may join with or without nudity.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is managing his rehab carefully as he plans to return to top form this season—he said he will not push his body like before. Critics point to his playoff struggles, but he stays determined to lead his team forward.  Metro Philadelphia
  • North Penn High School coach Dick Beck, entering his 24th season with 235 wins, said he will wait a month into the season to decide on retirement plans — his record recalls past coaching legends — as his team opens tonight against Downingtown East. Other Philadelphia Catholic League teams will travel out of the area to face a national opponent later this weekend.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
