COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Philly AIDS Thrift is celebrating 20 years with a free block party to honor more than $5M in donations for HIV/AIDS groups— the event will be held on Sept. 13 from noon to 6 p.m. on South 5th Street and will feature live music, a fire-breathing clown, and a pie-eating contest.  Metro Philadelphia

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Monday morning at around 9:50 a.m., a row home on the 2100 block of North Ninth Street in North Philadelphia partially collapsed while a demolition crew worked on a nearby vacant lot, injuring a construction worker who was taken to a hospital in stable condition—officials are investigating the cause.  KYW Newsradio
  • Firefighters are battling a five-alarm fire at an auto warehouse in Tacony that started at 4 a.m. near Longshore Avenue—thick smoke is visible from I-95 as marine units assist due to its location by the Delaware River.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jane Golden, founding director of Mural Arts Philadelphia, will step down in July after completing 15 major projects for the nation’s semiquincentennial—she will remain through 2026 to help ease the transition and support the search for a successor.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Philadelphia Federation of Teachers and the School District reached a tentative three-year deal just before school started, which stops a planned teacher walk-off after Labor Day—ensuring schools open on time. The contract gives more than 14,000 teachers three years of labor peace as more details will come soon.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dozens of SEPTA bus routes were cut on Sunday as the agency reduced service due to a $213 million deficit + riders are warned to allow extra time with fare hikes planned for Sept. 1 and further cuts expected if new state funds are not secured.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia commuters and students had to get up earlier on Monday because SEPTA cut 20% of its services at the start of the school year—many risked missing buses and trains. The agency will raise fares on Sept 1 and plan to cut half its routes on Jan 1 to address a $200 million shortfall, and similar moves may hit other cities soon.  KYW Newsradio

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Phillies bounced back after a poor mid-month road trip and are set to begin a three-game series against the Mets; today's game features southpaws Luzardo and Manaea. The team aims to win at least five of its next seven games to clinch the division (they hold a 7-game lead) and build on their recent 6-1 stretch.  Metro Philadelphia
