  • Walk Around Philadelphia returns this fall—inviting local residents to explore the city's diverse edge and connect with neighbors through guided walks that reveal hidden spots and local history. Preview hikes will be held on August 30 and August 31 before the main event runs from September 5 to 28.  WHYY

CRIME NEWS

  • A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by Meredith Elizalde that claimed the Philadelphia School District failed to protect her 14-year-old son Nicolas—killed by a stray bullet at a Roxborough High School scrimmage in September—saying random shooters were to blame.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • A Cumberland County man accused of killing his grandfather with a kitchen knife was arrested on Villanova’s campus yesterday—U.S. Marshals took him into custody after he drove his stolen Chevy Tahoe to a parking garage and charged him with homicide and weapons offenses.  KYW Newsradio
  • A former FOP official named Terry Reid borrowed more than $20,000 from a police widow and never repaid the money, prompting her daughter to file a complaint—Internal Affairs has not resolved the investigation nearly two-and-a-half years later.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • A report by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance finds that 41% of local theaters have returned to prepandemic audience levels while 71% show a yearly increase. Theater leaders say funding cuts and transit changes — including a Regional Rail curfew — are slowing full recovery.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tay Gowan, the former Eagles cornerback, is writing a book about his journey from homelessness to the NFL and the personal challenges he faced during COVID-19. He said the memoir will show young athletes how faith and hard work can lead to better opportunities—his story continues to unfold.  Metro Philadelphia
  • On August 26, Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Quinyon Mitchell helped 10 Bellmawr Purple Eagles gear up for the new season by partnering with Dick’s Sporting Goods in Cherry Hill. Mitchell said giving back to the community meant a lot as he provided the players with new gloves, cleats, and shoulder pads.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Union moved to the top of the Eastern Conference with a 4-0 win over Chicago Fire at Subaru Park as Kai Wagner and Milan Iloski earned MLS Team of the Matchday honors.
