COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Philadelphia entrepreneurs and influencers gathered on Aug 9 at the Free Library for the inaugural Big Black Ball to raise funds for college-bound Black scholars. The Achievers Brunch Association (founded in 2014) met its goal and will continue accepting donations to support mentorship and career programs.  WHYY

CRIME NEWS

  • Police said that a 45-year-old man was shot in the left thigh during a robbery in Northern Liberties on North Front Street at about 10:45 p.m.—a masked suspect demanded his chains and money before fleeing on foot with an iPhone while the victim remains stable at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the search continues.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s historic Trocadero Theatre at 10th and Arch remains closed and its future is unclear—its owner has not yet used a $2.5 million grant to begin renovating the venue. Local music fans still wait for news on when the building will reopen.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Temple University researchers published a study showing that high school girls who play sports develop leadership traits, such as assertiveness and independence—traits they mostly feel comfortable expressing during games. The study also found that social expectations and quality coaching play major roles in how these skills are displayed off the court.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s juror support program that helps jurors deal with trauma from tough cases began in April and will expand statewide by the end of September. Judges already share coping resources with jurors—like a first aid kit—to help them process troubling testimony.  KYW Newsradio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lou Trivino joined the Phillies on August 26th from Triple-A Lehigh Valley — the Green Lane native, who spent most of his career with West Coast teams, said he is excited to play for his hometown team and hopes to help them win a World Series.  Metro Philadelphia
  • On Friday, Philadelphia Union announced that Isaiah LeFlore was loaned to Detroit City FC for the remainder of the season—he played 20 games for Philadelphia Union II and adds depth for Detroit City FC's playoff push.  Metro Philadelphia
