COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s Schuylkill Banks have grown into a thriving public space after a 650-foot pedestrian bridge opened in May that links South Philly with Center City and the art museum—public and private groups helped build the connected trail. A new swing bridge will open in a few months to boost access to Bartram’s Garden and Southwest Philly, while the nearby University Avenue Bridge still needs fixing.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Philly will host the Annual St. Nicholas of Tolentine Italian Festival on Oct. 5 with a noon parade and a full day of food, music and live shows on the 1700 Block of South 9th Street—this free event honors over 100 years of Italian heritage.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Fairmount Park Conservancy will run fall programs in Philly’s parks that include paddleboating at FDR Park, salsa dancing at the FDR Boathouse, and star parties for stargazing. Citywide events like the Love Your Park fall weekend Nov. 14–16 will add more ways for residents to enjoy outdoor activities as the Conservancy adjusts plans based on participant feedback.  WHYY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Philadelphia water bills went up by 9.4% on Monday to pay for a 25-year plan to fix water systems (rising costs and new rules led to the change). Next year, the bills will rise by 5.5%.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After a three-alarm fire in 2023 destroyed its interior, Our Mother of Consolation Catholic School in Chestnut Hill reopened today following a $17.5 million renovation that upgraded classrooms, an innovation lab, and a cafeteria—while reusing historic materials to honor its past. Community fundraisers and insurance helped cover unexpected costs and launch the school's new chapter.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers introduced a bill Friday that will require paid breaks and water for workers when the heat index reaches 80°F—measures meant to protect employees on hot days. Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler’s proposal also requires plans to monitor high temperatures, postpone nonessential tasks, and impose fines for violations.  WHYY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Philadelphia is expanding free naloxone access today through the Naloxone in Black campaign—free distribution boxes are now set up outside 61 fire stations and the Office of Public Safety’s Overdose Response Unit will hire a staff member to restock boxes, train community members, and track the program’s impact.  Metro Philadelphia

SPORTS NEWS

  • Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is named number 1 in the NFL Top 100 after breaking several rushing records — he surpassed 2,000 yards and set a record for 100-yard games last season. The reigning champion will start the new season on Thursday when the Eagles play the Dallas Cowboys.  Metro Philadelphia
