EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Philadelphia's school selection process for the 2026–2027 school year opened on Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. and lets students apply to any district school with space; fifty schools are taking applications plus the process now uses updated lottery rules and test score changes for criteria-based schools. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker signed a new law Monday that requires gun shops to post bright orange warning signs stating it is illegal to misrepresent a gun purchase for someone barred from owning one—aiming to curb illegal straw purchases. KYW Newsradio
- ➤ This summer, ICE agents raided the Super Gigante food market in West Norriton and arrested 14 people while rapid-response activists trailed the operation to record actions and alert the community—supporting immigrant families amid rising enforcement. The volunteer teams also set up county hotlines to help citizens report ICE sightings as the agency increased its raids. The Philadelphia Inquirer
- ➤ Today at Central High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices Kevin Dougherty, David Wecht, and Christine Donohue urged voters to retain them for 10 more years amid a GOP campaign to unseat them — they stressed that their 10 years of rulings prove their independence from political bias. - ➤ Gov. Shapiro approved SEPTA's request to use up to $394M in capital funds for daily operations — the funding will preserve service over the next two years even as a 21.5% fare hike takes effect on Sept. 14. WHYY
- ➤ Mayor Cherelle Parker signed a new ordinance that requires Philly gun stores to display signs warning that buying a gun for someone not allowed to have one is a crime. The signs will be provided to about six stores and remind shoppers that straw purchases may lead to up to 10 years in jail—adding steep fines for severe cases. WHYY

- ➤ The Sixers announced that they will honor their 2001 championship team on its 25th anniversary ahead of the 2025-2026 season with throwback promotions, alumni tributes, and special merchandise. Tickets will be available from Sept. 10 at 12 p.m. and the team will mark the celebration during 14 select games. Metro Philadelphia
- ➤ The Philadelphia Eagles, who dominated in their Super Bowl LIX rematch nine months ago, are 1–0 and head to Kansas City with strong momentum.
