CULTURE NEWS

  • Starting today, the historic Wanamaker building will host The Layaway cabaret in Greek Hall as part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival—The Bearded Ladies Cabaret perform a cheeky show that blends opulence with a nod to failed consumerism. EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Joseph’s University announced Friday it sold 15 former University of the Sciences buildings to Belmont Neighborhood Educational Alliance—led by Michael Karp—and the sale could make room for a new college to train affordable teachers and a school for public service. City Councilmember Jamie Gauthier criticized the deal for ignoring community input while the university said the move fits its Jesuit mission and keeps a presence in West Philly.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia teachers, nurses, counselors, secretaries and paraprofessionals will get 3% raises each year and $1,400 bonuses in upcoming paychecks as the school board approved their new three-year contract on Thursday. The contract—retroactive to Sept. 1 and ratified by 69% of PFT members two weeks ago—will deliver raises by November and bonuses in the last October check.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Yesterday, Penn Carey Law announced a new postgraduate fellowship named for its first Black graduate, Sadie T.M. Alexander, and a full-tuition scholarship for incoming students with high financial need, following criticism of recent program changes. The fellowship will fund civil rights projects in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.—a move meant to honor Alexander’s legacy and broaden access to legal education.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 16-6 to send interim U.S. Attorney David Metcalf’s nomination to the full Senate for confirmation—this roll call vote creates a formal record that should ease his final approval next week as he oversees federal cases in the Philadelphia area.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • David Hogg, a Parkland High School shooting survivor, said he is considering recruiting a candidate for Philadelphia's 3rd Congressional District as Rep. Dwight Evans retires next year—he aims to support young progressives through his group Leaders We Deserve that funds fresh candidates in a competitive primary. His group has already backed candidates in other races and plans to build momentum for new voices in Congress.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Gov. Josh Shapiro said there is no long-term mass transit funding deal this year and that SEPTA must request capital funds from PennDot to cover its two-year operating expenses—after weeks of debate and widespread calls from riders for a fix.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Insurance plans are limiting coverage for GLP-1 drugs used solely for weight loss as Pennsylvania will only cover the drugs for patients at highest risk and North Carolina will end coverage on Oct. 1 — a change that may force patients to switch medications. Experts warn that such cost-saving measures could lead to weight regain and other health issues.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • On Friday, the Phillies beat the Royals 8-2 as Bryce Harper hit a two-run home run in the third inning which lowered their magic number to three for the NL East—Walker Buehler pitched five innings to give extra rest to the rotation amid key players’ injuries.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia Union will face the Vancouver Whitecaps today at 9:35 p.m. at BC Place in Vancouver—this match could give them three crucial points in the Supporters’ Shield race as the Whitecaps trail by eight points with five games remaining.  Metro Philadelphia
