  • The Philly215 HandballIsLyfe crew in Hunting Park is keeping street handball alive by maintaining their home court with personal funds and urging the city to invest in new courts and improved lighting—an indoor facility would help for winter play. CULTURE NEWS

  • The Improvised Shakespeare Company will perform shows at the Perelman Theater inside Kimmel Center on Sept. 19 and 20 — the group creates each play on the spot using audience suggestions.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Rising star Alizé Cruz will play Katherine Howard in ‘SIX: The Musical’ at Ensemble Arts’ Academy of Music in Philadelphia from Sept 30 to Oct 5 — she brings her pop-powered style and strong theater background to the role.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Hyatt Centric Philadelphia will host a Maker Series art showcase to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month—featuring local artists Jaime Alvarez and Marta Sanchez. The event will open on Sept. 25 with a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 1620 Chancellor St.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Tony-nominated Adam Pascal will perform at Rittenhouse Grill on Sept. 29 and 30 — he will share personal stories and songs from his musical theater career, including his time in RENT and other Broadway shows. Guests can choose a dinner-and-show package or bar seating with a brief post-show meet and greet.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia is hosting a series of Oktoberfest events this fall — including celebrations on South Street on Sept. 27 and in Fishtown on Sept. 20 that offer German beer, food, live music, and family activities. Other events on Oct. 4, Oct. 10/11, and Oct. 18 will feature stein holding contests and festive competitions — drawing locals to experience Bavarian culture.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia's Civic Coalition to Save Lives and Rev. David W. Brown will host an online peace journalism discussion on Sept. 25—part of a week of events marking the UN International Day of Peace on Sept. 21. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Council defended a business curfew that became law on Sept 11 without Mayor Parker’s signature—officials say it is meant to reduce nuisance business activity in areas including Nicetown, Frankford and parts of Kensington, with exemptions for liquor license holders, gas stations and drive-throughs. The law will take effect in 60 days and imposes fines of $1,000 per day for violations.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia suburban voters in Chester and Montgomery counties will vote on measures to fund a police department and preserve open space. West Pikeland Township proposes a property tax increase up to 1.5 mill—while Montgomery County townships plan an earned income tax increase for parks and clean water—as Bucks County has no ballot questions.  WHYY
  • SEPTA will raise fares today to help close a $213 million deficit and restore service as new pricing is expected to generate $31 million a year—officials say the change is necessary to maintain daily operations for riders who depend on transit for work and school.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Parking Authority will activate automated speed cameras along Broad Street on Sept. 15 to start a 60-day warning period where speeding drivers receive mailed warnings instead of tickets. The system targets a high-risk corridor that recorded 206 fatal and serious crashes between 2020 and 2024 — drivers exceeding the limit by 11 mph will face fines from $100 to $150 when citations begin on Nov. 14.  Metro Philadelphia

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Allentown, uninsured immigrant Solibel Olaverria almost faced a hospital transfer after emergency surgery for a brain aneurysm—administrators suggested sending her to the Dominican Republic without full consent, and her husband, Clase, along with community protests, helped prompt Philadelphia to pass a law that now requires written consent for such moves. Experts warn that reduced federal funding and financial pressures could drive hospitals to consider repatriation more often while families continue to struggle with long-term care decisions.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
