CULTURE NEWS

  • Calder Gardens is a new art space dedicated to Alexander Calder’s mid-20th century work. An inaugural artists’ parade will take place today from noon to 2 p.m.—the space will open to the public tomorrow with a building by Herzog & de Meuron and gardens by Piet Oudolf.  KYW Newsradio
  • Philadelphia’s first queer women’s sports bar, Marsha’s, opened in South Street as Chivonn Anderson cut the ribbon with a pair of large scissors and a crowd filled the doors on its first Friday night—local fans will watch the Eagles, Phillies and other teams while leaders praise this new inclusive space.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia officials introduced a bill that would stop the city from signing waste disposal contracts with companies that burn trash at the Reworld facility in Chester—current contracts expire in June and the change could lower pollution in nearby neighborhoods. Councilmember Jamie Gauthier said the measure aims to improve air quality and address environmental racism in the area.  WHYY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Temple nurses and allied health professionals at Temple University Hospital voted Friday to authorize a strike if a new contract is not reached by September 30 so that 2,600 staff members could hold action beginning October 1. Temple Health said it expected the move — as ongoing talks over safety, staffing, and benefit cuts continue.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Pennsylvania joined seven other states and New York City in the Northeast Public Health Collaborative—set to share vaccine recommendations, emergency plans, and lab services amid new federal policies; state health officials said the move will help ensure residents get the care they need.  WHYY

  • Developers in Ocean City may build luxury townhouses at the former Gillian’s Wonderland Pier if offers are accepted, with Philip Norcross offering $25 million to buy the site. Home values in the Philly metro area grew by $41.5 billion from June 2024 to June 2025 & this gain ranks the region among the top U.S. markets.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • New research from Drexel University shows that Philadelphia luxury home sales jumped nearly 500% over the last five years as median prices rose by about 50%—raising concerns about housing affordability and gentrification. City officials will invest $2 billion in housing programs to help residents with lower incomes.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a historic 7-0 loss in Vancouver and a 3-1 exit from the US Open Cup, the Philadelphia Union are preparing to face New England Revolution today at 2:30 p.m. at Subaru Park, and coach Bradley Carnell said the team will learn from past errors to finish the season strong—missing key players with suspensions and awaiting an update on Andre Blake.  Metro Philadelphia

  • The Eagles have a 2-0 record and will face the Rams in Week 3 as they try to get A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith more involved in the pass game—analysts say this change may give them an edge.   • Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Spencer Gill said his confidence grew during training camp after he recovered from a broken ankle that limited his play last season—he set his sights on giving everything he had under new head coach Rick Tocchet.
