CULTURE NEWS

  • Today the Academy of Natural Sciences is open only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—its hours are Friday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—because low visitor numbers and federal funding cuts prompted the change. A staff restructuring will follow in early October.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia’s Puerto Rican Day Parade brought more than 1,500 people to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Tuesday, September 30—celebrating over 60 years of tradition that connects young and old with culture and pride.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • The Painted Bride Art Center in Old City is scheduled for demolition in October after years of legal battles— a security wall has been built and a demolition notice posted for on or after October 15. Developer Shimi Zakin said a 65-foot-tall apartment building will replace the site— with many tiles from Isaiah Zagar’s mosaic preserved for history.  KYW Newsradio
  • Pop singer Natasha Bedingfield posted a viral TikTok on Tuesday showing her making a Philly Taco — a pizza-wrapped cheesesteak — while using local lingo. She will perform on South Street today at Theatre of the Living Arts as part of her tour, and fans are guiding her to the best cheesesteak spots.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Philly teachers did not get the 3% raise promised in their new contract because payroll software issues delayed the payment — Superintendent Tony Watlington said the raises will be processed on the Oct. 24 payroll and bonuses paid on Oct. 10. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Pennsylvania appellate court ruled that Philadelphia may limit stops for eight minor traffic violations—an action meant to reduce racial bias—while dissenting judges argued that state law should block the change. City officials said they will continue enforcing the policy and expect more cities to follow its example.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Transit advocates in Philadelphia launched the Week Without Driving on Monday to urge residents to try public transportation and stress the need for a long-term funding solution for SEPTA. Local groups and speakers shared practical benefits of accessible transit—an issue drawing nationwide attention.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown posted a cryptic Bible verse on social media after the team almost lost an 18-point lead against Tampa Bay - his message indirectly criticized the conservative play and drew a terse rebuke from former legend Seth Joyner, while coach Nick Sirianni defended him as the team will host the Broncos on Sunday.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Today the MLB Wild Card round begins and experts predict the Phillies will win playoff rounds and the World Series with strong play from Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner—teams such as the Cubs, Yankees and Mariners will fall short.   • The Phillies held an afternoon workout at Citizens Bank Park as they prepped for an intrasquad scrimmage benefiting Phillies Charities today at 6 p.m. + Phillies President Dave Dombrowski said Zack Wheeler’s surgery was successful and the team awaits its NL Wild Card series opponent while finalizing the NLDS roster.  Metro Philadelphia
