COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Temple University will host the Greater Philadelphia MLK Day of Service on Jan 19—its first time hosting since 2009 when Girard College held the event. The day will feature community projects including building book arks, a career fair, a peace rally, and a kids carnival to honor Dr. King's legacy.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia police leadership is developing a five-year public safety plan and is asking local residents to share their ideas through an online survey. The draft is expected early next year—before funding discussions for the city budget beginning July 1—so community input will guide police reforms.  WHYY
  • Federal safety officials told SEPTA to stop running its Silverliner IV trains (built in the 1970s) after five fires forced passengers to evacuate, with one train having two fires and two destroyed; SEPTA will spend nearly $1 billion to replace the old cars, a process that will not finish until 2036.  Spotlight PA
  • A Glenside veteran joined an international flotilla to deliver food and medicine to Gaza before leaving the mission because of health concerns — local lawmakers from nearby counties signed a bill to block U.S. military aid shipments to Israel. The legislation aims to restrict weapons transfers that could worsen the conflict.  WHYY
  • The Philadelphia Hospitality Center, known as the 'flying saucer,' has sat vacant for a decade at LOVE Park and may soon be designated as a historic landmark after a vote on Oct. 10 by the historical commission. The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation will issue a new RFP this fall to select a tenant by the holiday season—ensuring the center is revived for upcoming national events.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker sent the City Council an initial HOME initiative budget that includes about $90 million for preservation programs, $20 million for affordable housing production, and $40 million for home purchase assistance, plus funds for homeless prevention and rent assistance. The Council has 60 days to pass the budget so the city can issue bonds for the program—ensuring the next steps in addressing local housing needs.  KYW Newsradio

  • Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J Brown apologized on Wednesday for his cryptic biblical tweet after the team's 31-25 win over the Buccaneers—he said his message was not aimed at any team member and promised to keep working hard for his home team.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Phillies have launched an online lottery for non-season ticket holders to try to buy postseason tickets for NLCS and World Series games after NLDS tickets sold out at Citizens Bank Park. Registration is open until 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 12 and fans selected will receive an email with purchase details—tickets remain subject to availability.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Unrivaled Basketball, the 3v3 professional women’s league, will play two games at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Jan. 30—marking the first women’s pro basketball event in Philadelphia since 1998, with over 5,000 tickets already sold and local stars like Kahleah Copper set to compete when the season begins on Jan. 5.  WHYY
  • The Eagles will play the Broncos on Oct. 5th at 1:00 PM EST at Lincoln Financial Field — the team plans to use a run-heavy offense led by Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley to control the game.
