ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Seven people were forced to leave their homes after part of Greater Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church at 56th Street and Woodland Avenue in Kingsessing collapsed on Sunday — neighboring homes were evacuated and the building will likely be demolished while the American Red Cross aids affected families.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Descendants of famed UPenn physicist Arthur Goodspeed donated early X-ray images taken on glass plates in 1896 that show coins inside a purse—these artifacts mark a key step in the development of modern medical imaging and are now stored in the university archives for controlled display.  WHYY
  • Opera Philadelphia is continuing its Pipe Up! series in the vacant Macy’s building despite delays from overdue inspections; General Director Anthony Roth Costanzo said concerts in the Grand Court will begin by the end of October—pending final approvals.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Navy and Marines will celebrate 250 years with events in Philadelphia starting Thursday, Oct. 9 at 8 a.m.—a ship parade on the Delaware and tours of historic ships will kick off the festivities. A 7,000-person military parade will march on Oct. 13 and feature Navy and Marine leaders as speakers.  WHYY
  • Pennsylvania voters will decide this November if three state Supreme Court justices (Donohue, Dougherty, and Wecht) should serve another 10 years as parties spend record funds on ads and outreach. A loss for all three would leave the court deadlocked and may slow decisions on voting and redistricting.  KYW Newsradio
  • Philadelphia lawmakers began reviewing Mayor Parker's proposed $194.6 million H.O.M.E. budget—funding 26 programs to preserve and create affordable housing and assist renters and homeowners. Housing advocates claim the plan does not go far enough to support low-income households.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia judge Scott DiClaudio said his remark was a friendly compliment when speaking with Judge Zachary Shaffer, but Shaffer said the words tried to change a criminal case—state officials now want to suspend him without pay as a review goes on.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • After a disappointing 2024 season, the Philadelphia Union clinched the Supporters’ Shield on Saturday with a win against New York City that put them far ahead of Cincinnati—Coach Bradley Carnell said the team is now focused on winning the MLS Cup and will play Charlotte on the road this weekend.  Metro Philadelphia
  • On Oct 5, the Eagles lost to the Broncos 21—17 at Lincoln Financial Field after they surrendered a 17—3 lead when key plays by Denver tipped the game. The team, now 4–1, will work on discipline and health issues before their next matchup.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Phillies lost to the Dodgers 4-3 in Game 2 of the NLDS on Monday night — the defeat puts them on the brink of elimination as Game 3 will be played on Wednesday — a critical contest for the team.  WHYY
