- ➤ Philadelphia schools got a 10-day extension to report fall enrollment to the state because SEPTA service cuts disrupted student travel; Superintendent Tony Watlington said early figures show enrollment is down a few hundred compared to last year—officials will study each school’s data for further impact. - ➤ Regional Rail riders face delays as SEPTA inspects 225 aging Silverliner IV cars from the 1970s after five train fires prompted an emergency order, including one at Gravers Station on Sept. 25. - ➤ Roosevelt Poplar, who has led the Philly police union since 2023, was elected for a three-year term on Tuesday with 4,159 votes against Charles Knute Mellon's 2,072 in a turnout of 51% from eligible members. - ➤ More than 66,000 federal employees in Pennsylvania have been furloughed since Oct 1 due to the government shutdown—services like airport operations and historic site visits are disrupted. Lawmakers remain divided over funding, and while affected workers will receive back pay when the shutdown ends, contractors will not be compensated—adding extra strain to the state. WHYY
- ➤ Philadelphia families celebrated the first full year of the Philly Joy Bank pilot program—where 250 pregnant mothers in Cobbs Creek, Strawberry Mansion, and Nicetown-Tioga received $1,000 a month for 18 months—at Smith Memorial Playground on Oct. 4. City officials will study the program’s impact and release a report in 2026, with plans to expand it if the results are positive. WHYY
- ➤ PennDOT said it will close Vine Street at Ninth in both directions starting Oct. 20 for an $8.5 million safety improvement project that will last until Feb. 3. Motorists will be directed to other roads while the project adds pedestrian and cyclist improvements on Vine Street — work is fully funded with federal dollars. The Philadelphia Inquirer

- ➤ RFK Jr. demanded that groups setting medical education standards add nutrition to exams and residency requirements within two weeks—Drexel and Rowan universities said they have taught nutrition for years. The universities highlighted that their long-standing curricula already cover topics on vitamins, food labels, and healthy meal planning. WHYY

- ➤ The Flyers held their annual Gritty 5K on Saturday morning at the E Lot and drew a record of about 4,300 runners—featuring singing, cake throwing and a hot dog station at the finish.
