COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Free Library announced that seven more branches now offer Saturday hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Bustleton, Frankford, Haddington, Lawncrest, and Roxborough already on the new schedule—Cecil B. Moore will start this week and Chestnut Hill on Oct. 18, and the library plans to have all 54 branches open on weekends by year's end amidst funding and staffing challenges. The Philadelphia Inquirer

- ➤ Yun Fuentes, the chef at Bolo in Rittenhouse Square, woke up on Wednesday to find his South Philly home vandalized with red paint and a banner reading 'D&Z' (camera footage showed the act occurred around 2:15 a.m.), and he said he was relieved to learn the attack was likely a case of mistaken identity as neighbors and strangers offered help. - ➤ Financial aid for thousands of college students is on hold because the state budget impasse continues and funds will not be disbursed until Gov. Shapiro signs the budget. Local colleges are using alternative funding—though delays may worsen the financial strain on students. KYW Newsradio
- ➤ Philly schools showed mixed test results as math proficiency improved by 12.9 percentage points with 33.7% of third graders proficient while reading scores dropped by 2.9 points to 31.4%. - ➤ Philadelphia Councilmember Nicolas O’Rourke introduced a bill on October 9 that would give a city rebate to low-income renters who qualify for the state Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program—this plan helps seniors, widows, and people with disabilities and requires landlords to provide rebate details to new tenants while the measure awaits a charter vote next year. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Due to a state budget impasse, Philadelphia’s only rape crisis center—WOAR—is cutting more than half its staff and will soon reduce key services that help sexual assault survivors.
