Good morning, Philadelphia. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 11th of October.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Due to a forecast storm the free Victory at Sea concert scheduled for Sunday evening will move from Independence Mall to the Temple Performing Arts Center and will be livestreamed at 7 p.m. In-person access will be limited to invited guests while the show will feature Patti LaBelle with the U.S. Navy Band and U.S. Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps, special guest Justin Guarini, bluegrass band Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, and actor-comedian Rob Riggle as host.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Temple University’s Liacouras Center in North Philly is hosting 8 Seconds Rodeo today—a revival of Black urban rodeos in decades—that will feature bull riding, barrel racing and bareback bronco riding for a $60,000 prize pool. Ivan McClellan said the event required 2 million pounds of softened dirt and 50 dump trucks to prepare the arena, which has already sold 70% of its 7,000 seats.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia's Power 99 announced that starting Monday it will broadcast The Breakfast Club radio show from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. The influential program, hosted by Charlemagne Tha God — with DJ Envy and Jess Hilarious, replaces the Rise + Grind Morning Show and brings popular music and interviews to local listeners.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Ken Burns previewed his new 12-hour documentary 'The American Revolution' at a Camden screening on October 9 — the film shows the key moments of America’s early history — and it will air on WHYY and PBS starting Nov 16.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Temple University announced Friday that it renamed its School of Public Health in honor of Christopher M. Barnett—who donated $55 million with $20 million going toward an autism center—making it the largest gift in the university’s history.  KYW Newsradio
  • Teachers for the Haverford Township school district have been working without a contract since Sept. 1 after a three-year agreement expired on Aug. 31, and contract talks continue as the union and district work to close a 6 million wage gap. About 100 community members attended Thursday’s board meeting and voiced support for competitive pay, with union president Adam Nancarrow noting that recent discussions have narrowed previous differences (though further negotiations are needed).  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal workers furloughed during the shutdown may apply for unemployment benefits from the state Department of Labor—those still reporting for duty are not eligible. Officials said benefits are fully federally funded and workers who later receive back pay might have to repay the funds.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia will observe Columbus/Indigenous Peoples’ Day Monday as City Hall will be closed after an appeals court ruled that former-Mayor Jim Kenney’s 2021 order replacing Columbus Day was invalid. Community groups plan holiday weekend events — while city officials have not shared details on additional celebrations.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • A U.S. Bankruptcy Judge granted a motion on Friday allowing Prospect Medical Holdings to abandon Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Springfield Hospital if a sale did not materialize—an auction for the hospitals was set later that day with starting bids of $7 million and $3 million. Attorneys said the decision followed an agreement with Delaware County tax authorities to lower assessments and attract bidders.  WHYY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Audacy’s I'm Listening campaign reminded Philadelphians of mental health resources on October 10— a day for raising awareness and support— and continues to share stories and aid listeners year-round.  KYW Newsradio

  • On October 9, 2025, Eagles veteran Lane Johnson said the offense was inconsistent after a 34–17 loss to the Giants in New Jersey (blaming short drives and missed plays). The team will work on its play during a 10-day break before a tough road game against the Vikings (a must-win game for Philadelphia).  Metro Philadelphia
