COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The West Philly Tool Library, which has served 1,300 members for 15 years, must move from its current home by the end of November as its landlord raised the rent—its leadership is raising funds and calling for volunteer help to cover moving and renovation costs; a fundraiser with pumpkin carving, food, and raffle prizes is scheduled for Oct 25.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Some workers at World Cafe Live said that on Sept. 30 their pay was first deposited and then revoked with no clear explanation from a boss — unionized staff claim management has not agreed to meet after earlier walkouts over pay problems and a tough work environment. CULTURE NEWS

  • Yesterday, a parade of mostly marching bands and re-enactors marched through downtown Philadelphia to mark 250 years of the U.S. Navy and Marines as part of the weeklong Homecoming 250 commemoration. Thousands gathered to honor the military legacy—light rain did not stop the festive spirit.  WHYY
  • Local groups and national partners have started urgent repairs on the old house at 1511 N. 33rd Street in Strawberry Mansion, where jazz great John Coltrane once lived, to honor his legacy for a centennial celebration next year.   • A new study shows that American shad and river herring in the Delaware River Basin have dropped to unsustainable levels. Federal and state agencies will work together to remove dams and fix water intake systems—steps they hope may help the fish recover over time.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials pledged that the 250th anniversary festivities in 2026 will be accessible to all Philadelphians—ensuring safe access for people with disabilities. City Councilmember Kendra Brooks and local advocates stressed that improvements to bus lanes and handicapped parking will be prioritized—making accessibility a mandatory part of the plans.  KYW Newsradio
  • The Penn State Board of Trustees approved a plan transferring WPSU to WHYY, ending the university’s $17.6 million subsidy and setting WHYY to operate the station for at least three years—WHYY will secure $8.36 million in outside funds and allow current employees to apply for similar roles—ensuring public media stays available in central Pennsylvania.  WHYY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medicare open enrollment for 2026 starts Oct.15 in PA, NJ and Delaware, letting people 65 and older switch or change plans that may include new premiums, drug costs and fewer telehealth options.   • Former Eagles coach Dick Vermeil said at a Columbus Day breakfast in Wilmington that the NFL champions still have a chance if they stay healthy and keep the faith, despite a slow season start with four wins and two losses.   • The Sixers celebrate the 25th anniversary of their 2001 Eastern Conference Championship with throwback jerseys and the return of their classic mascot Hip-Hop. Bill Roth, the original Hip-Hop, will appear on select game dates—his first being Saturday, Nov. 8 against Toronto.  Metro Philadelphia
