COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Philly Bike Ride will take place on Saturday, Oct 18 at 7:30 a.m. when streets are closed for a 20-mile car-free route that starts at the Philadelphia Art Museum and ends with a festival at Eakins Oval — live music, food, and vendor activities will be on offer. About 6,000 riders will follow a loop through Center City to highlight the need for safer biking and better cycling infrastructure.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Wheelchair users in Philadelphia face dangerous conditions as illegally parked cars and crumbling sidewalks block curb cuts and force people onto busy streets—local officials and advocates note that the city has yet to fully address these accessibility issues.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School administrators warned that the state budget deadlock—now more than 100 days late—is causing local schools to lose millions and borrow funds to keep the lights on. They said that funding delays have forced hiring freezes and postponed projects, which are harming essential services for vulnerable students.  WHYY
  • Valley Forge Military Academy announced it will close next year due to financial and enrollment issues while a proposal for the Valley Forge Public Service Academy Charter School—designed to enroll up to 150 students in public service careers next fall—has emerged secretly, drawing criticism from parents, alumni, and local educators over transparency.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA last week added PFHxS-Na—a toxic forever chemical used in firefighting foams—to the Toxics Release Inventory that tracks harmful chemical releases from industrial facilities. The new listing will help local residents learn about pollution and may lead to stronger rules on chemical use.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lower Merion Township commissioners have proposed an ordinance to phase out gas-powered leaf blowers starting with a seasonal ban in 2026 and a full ban by 2029—aimed at reducing noise and air pollution. The proposal, which will be advertised on Oct. 22 and considered for approval on Nov. 19, includes complaint-based fines and a potential buy-back incentive—meant to help current users adjust.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Transit advocates held a demonstration at LOVE Park on Tuesday morning to call for stable state funding for SEPTA after the agency used capital funds to reverse service cuts — warning that this temporary fix is unsustainable — as they urged lawmakers to pass a budget supporting reliable transit services. They showcased their concerns with a burning train prop and stressed the need for predictable funding to avoid future service cuts.  KYW Newsradio
  • A West Philadelphia business group held a virtual briefing Tuesday to guide its members on how to prepare for possible ICE raids and National Guard deployments even though local officials say Philadelphia is not a target. Former Army official Patrick Murphy and attorney Jonathan Grode stressed that business owners should know their rights — including that private areas are off limits without a warrant.  KYW Newsradio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Crozer-Chester Medical Center is reportedly being bought for $10 million by Chariot Partners and Springfield Hospital is being acquired for $3 million by Philadelphia-based Restorative Health Foundation and Syan Investments—officials say the deals are aimed at relieving the health care gap caused by recent hospital closures. • Reports on Monday indicated Phillies manager Rob Thomson will remain in charge through 2026—while a press conference on Thursday morning is expected to announce coaching changes, including a possible replacement for hitting coach Kevin Long due to the team’s recent offensive struggles.
