COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Affordable Housing Centers of Pennsylvania and Community Legal Services of Philadelphia announced the Will Power Program helped 1,000 Philly homeowners create wills to protect their properties from tangled titles—celebrated at Zion Baptist Church in North Philadelphia and backed by $100,000 in state funding announced on Wednesday. The program partners with trusted local groups to hold workshops and plans to help many more families secure their legacies.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Wiener dog lovers gathered in Manayunk at Venice Island this week for Lucky’s Great Wiener Race to raise funds for PAWS. Sixty-five dachshunds in hot-dog costumes raced on a 40-foot synthetic grass track—drawing 400 supporters—while competitors vied for the title of fastest dog.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Today, about 6,000 bicyclists will ride 20 miles on car-free streets with rolling closures in South Philadelphia, Center City, and near the Art Museum—later, demonstrators will march along Market Street and Independence Mall for a No Kings protest as extra closures ensure safety. The events are scheduled to follow a set timeline starting at 7:30 a.m. for the ride and 12:30 p.m. for the protest.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Neneh Cherry visited her mother Moki Cherry’s posthumous solo exhibition at Philadelphia’s Fabric Workshop & Museum, where the art shows her blend of family life and creative design. The show is on view until April 12.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Temple University and the Library Company of Philadelphia moved a step closer to a merger when Library Company trustees approved the deal last Thursday. Further approvals from shareholders, Temple’s board, and state officials are needed (a shareholder meeting is likely in late November).  The Philadelphia Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials took back the long-held home of the Polish American Cultural Center in Society Hill—an arrangement originally set in 1987 by former Mayor Goode. The Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority took the nonprofit to court in 2023 and a judge ordered it to pay $3.5 million in debt and damages before evicting it this April.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 500 older residents joined the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging’s 13th Senior Strut along Boathouse Row on October 17, led by the Hunting Park We Walk PHL group; they wore matching T-shirts and fuzzy yellow pom-poms while exercising and building social connection. The free citywide program encourages physical activity among seniors + strengthens community ties.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Philadelphia 76ers played a preseason game at the Xfinity Mobile Arena against the Timberwolves—Joel Embiid returned from injury and scored 14 points while rookie VJ Edgecombe scored 26 in his debut. The game was the final preseason match before the 2025–26 NBA season, and Embiid will take a few days to recover before returning to practice.  Metro Philadelphia
