COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A vigil for Kada Scott brought neighbors together in mourning to honor her memory and share their grief—organizers noted the event underscored local unity—.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bank of America was named the official banking partner for the Xfinity Mobile Arena as the 76ers and Flyers began their season, joining efforts to support local small businesses and community programs. The bank will work with its partners on new initiatives that include small business support and youth development opportunities.  Metro Philadelphia

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philly Pub Sing invites residents to join an open sing-along event where instruments are welcome but not needed—participants just bring a song to share and learn from one another.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • On Nov. 18, author Lorene Cary will join a live virtual discussion via Zoom to talk about her novel If Sons, Then Heirs — which explores Black history and migration. The event is hosted by Spotlight PA’s Booklight PA and partnered with A Novel Idea in East Passyunk.  Spotlight PA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A large sinkhole has forced a partial closure of the Schuylkill River Trail from Race Street to JFK Boulevard, and city officials are working with the Philadelphia Water Department and engineers to assess the damage and plan repairs. The Water Department will use dye to trace the cause near Arch Street—trail users should follow posted detour signs until the work is complete.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials said LIHEAP—the help for low-income households with utility bills—is delayed as Pennsylvania waits for its federal funding amid the government shutdown—applications may begin Dec. 3 if the funds arrive on time.  WHYY
  • Starting Nov. 3, 40 city employees will patrol Philadelphia to issue fines for illegal dumping that can reach up to $5,000 per item if a vehicle is used and up to $2,000 when dumped on foot. Officials say the new program uses recent laws and increased surveillance—along with possible vehicle impoundment—to end illegal dumping in the city.  WHYY
  • City officials plan to rebuild Carousel House in West Philly into a universal rec center for people with disabilities and local residents. The project will open in summer 28 after costs rose to $40 million — leaving wheelchair basketball teams and community members waiting for a new home.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Philadelphia 76ers beat the Boston Celtics 117-116 on the road after coming back from a double-digit second-half deficit. Joel Embiid appeared healthy, Tyrese Maxey scored 40 points, and rookie VJ Edgecombe set a debut record with 34 points.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Phillies lost in the NL Division Series and will begin their offseason moves when free agency starts at 5 p.m. ET on the fifth day after the World Series. They aim to re-sign key players (Schwarber, Suárez, and Realmuto) while eyeing new additions (Bassitt and Dominguez) to boost their roster for 2026.  Metro Philadelphia
  • After a strong win in Minnesota that saw Jalen Hurts complete a perfect game and key plays from AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, the Philadelphia Eagles will host the New York Giants at Lincoln Financial Field on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. The team must keep its offensive burst and solid defense to build on its win—especially as Saquon Barkley faces a fresh challenge against the Giants.  Metro Philadelphia
