Good morning, Philadelphia. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 25th of October.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mavis Pusey, once ignored by the art world, is showing new work at Philadelphia’s ICA — the museum is giving her art a fresh chance to be seen. This revival exhibition marks a turning point in how her work is viewed.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Curio Theatre Company presents Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors— a twisted, fast-paced spin on Bram Stoker’s classic with rapid wordplay and physical comedy. The 90-minute show plays through Nov. 1 at 4740 Baltimore Ave and is recommended for ages 13 and older.  Metro Philadelphia

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Philadelphia has seen three new proposals for stand-alone parking garages this year: a 372-space project in Fishtown near the Fillmore concert hall and Rivers Casino, a 495-space project in University City designed to support a new forensics lab, and a 1,005-space facility by CHOP in Grays Ferry. Developers expect mixed income streams and pedestrian-friendly designs to counter rising building costs and high taxes + critics warn the projects may worsen traffic and air quality.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • A study by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia found that preserving older properties helps keep housing affordable and drives investment and job growth – a key point as Mayor Parker’s H.O.M.E. initiative looks to expand housing. The report released Wednesday shows that historic rehabilitation projects have attracted $4 billion, increased job opportunities, and boosted population density in historic districts.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • John Alston started the Chester Children’s Chorus at Swarthmore College in 1994 to give children in Chester music lessons and math tutoring (the program now serves 119 students from grades 3 to 12). He said he is prouder of the group's academic progress than its musical success and wants to keep improving the support for the students.  Spotlight PA
  • After a 16-year-old student brought a 9mm handgun to North Penn High on Tuesday and was taken into police custody, school board officials confirmed the Evolv weapons detection system will remain in place every day—parents had urged the district to make the system permanent.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials warned that if the federal shutdown continues into November, nearly 472,000 Philadelphians may lose access to SNAP benefits while local food banks already under strain face greater demand. Local groups offer alternative food resources—experts urge residents to save and seek support as contingency funds are debated.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Philadelphia Union are the top seed in the MLS Cup Playoffs and will face Chicago Fire at Subaru Park Sunday. The club has built strong home field advantage and defense during the season but has shown weakness in scoring and against other playoff teams—challenges they will need to overcome on their run to the Cup.  Metro Philadelphia
  • A.J. Brown is ruled out for Sunday's game against the New York Giants after missing every practice this week due to a hamstring injury—he will miss his first game of the season, as confirmed by the official report released Friday before 4 p.m. which also listed other injured players.  Metro Philadelphia
  • After a 34-17 loss two weeks ago, the Eagles will host the Giants at Lincoln Financial Field as they look to avenge the setback—key matchups will spotlight the rookie quarterback and defensive improvements.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Philadelphia Flyers hit the road against the Ottawa Senators and scored 29 seconds in with a goal by Tyson Foerster, but their early lead faded when Michael Amadio tied the game with help from former Flyer Claude Giroux — Ottawa took the lead early in the second as Dan Vladar made 31 saves, and the team will host the New York Islanders tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.  Metro Philadelphia
