COMMUNITY NEWS

  • With SNAP benefits at risk due to the government shutdown, several local businesses in Philadelphia are offering free or low-cost meals to help residents in need—Weavers Way Co-Op has launched a food fund, Center City Soft Pretzel is giving out free pretzels, The Hart of Catering & Café will serve weekly casseroles starting Nov. 8th, Juana Tamale offers free kids' meals from Nov. 1st, and Gopuff, Spring House Tavern, and K and A Bagel have joined the effort.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia-based relief organizations are taking donations and volunteers to help victims of Hurricane Melissa, which caused severe damage in the Caribbean. Donation drop-offs at Besco Shippers on 54th Street and Baltimore Avenue and at True United Church in Ogontz are collecting needed items such as tarps, generators and medical kits.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Volunteer tour guides at Laurel Hill in Philadelphia share the unusual life stories of those buried there, such as a 25-year-old stockbroker who died from a shark bite in 1916—stories that remind us how the past shapes the city. The tours, which last between 90 minutes and two hours, require a year of training and deep research to preserve these local histories.  Spotlight PA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced Thursday that over 107,000 Pennsylvanians will soon receive unclaimed property notices as part of Pennsylvania Money Match—checks for eligible single-owner claims up to $500 will be mailed mid-December.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Councilmember Jamie Gauthier of the 3rd District is distributing over 600 pounds of fresh produce and groceries today at her district office at 606 S. 52nd Street — near the intersection of 52nd Street and Cedar Avenue — to help residents impacted by the SNAP freeze. The giveaway will run from noon until supplies run out, and Gauthier is expected to arrive around 12:30 p.m. after City Council’s meeting.  Metro Philadelphia

HEALTH NEWS

  • Abhi Rastogi, Temple Health’s chief operating officer for 23 years, will succeed Mike Young as CEO on Jan. 2—Young retires after leading the system through significant growth and stability. Rastogi plans to focus on technology, staff stability, and expanding access as Medicaid cuts loom for many government-insured patients.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Philadelphia 76ers exercised the team option on Jared McCain's contract for the 2026-27 season—his deal is worth about $4.4 million—after he returned to non-contact practice following injuries that had kept him out of play.  Metro Philadelphia
  • At the middle of the season, the Eagles named Jalen Hurts as MVP and also honored Jihaad Campbell as Rookie of the Year, Cooper DeJean as X-Factor, DeVonta Smith as Offensive Player of the Year and Zack Baun as Defensive Player of the Year. The team leads the NFL in red zone scoring at 85%—a mark of strong play despite offense problems—and tougher tests are expected in Week 10.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Adem Bona is fighting to secure the Sixers backup center role as he competes with Andre Drummond behind Joel Embiid. He has made key defensive plays – including crucial blocks and points – but must curb foul trouble and stay consistent to hold his spot.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Allison Stoutland — a children's book author and wife of the Eagles offensive line coach Jeff — makes homemade blankets as coveted Christmas gifts for the linemen.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Former Eagles stars Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson are set to face off tonight at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field as college football coaches — Vick leads Norfolk State Spartans and calls Philadelphia a second home while Jackson coaches Delaware State Hornets in a historic match-up.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
