Good morning, Philadelphia. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 8th of November.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia Museum of Art’s 49th Contemporary Craft Show is open today at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Center City—nearly 200 artists display crafts from fashion to furniture. Visitors get a chance to meet the artisans directly.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia’s Tempesta di Mare honored the musical genius of 18th century Venetian orphans on Friday and is continuing its tribute today with 'Hidden Virtuosas' at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral—featuring rare Baroque music composed for and by orphaned women. Students from Girard College join the performance to echo the historic role of music education that once lifted these vulnerable groups out of poverty.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Philadelphia parents from Lift Every Voice pressed the school board at a public hearing Thursday to demand a written policy that guarantees students two daily water and bathroom breaks along with a 20-minute recess and a 20-minute lunch period. The board will review the policy on Nov. 20.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Center City roads are closed for the Rocky Run today on Benjamin Franklin Parkway and MLK Drive until 2 p.m.—closures will continue Sunday for the Veterans Parade and Monday for a Marine Corps birthday block party; officials urge motorists to use alternate routes and public transit to avoid delays.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • More than two dozen PHL flights were canceled Friday as the FAA ordered a 10% service cut at major airports amid the ongoing federal shutdown. Philadelphia passengers now plan to use alternative transportation — while officials say the move helps ease pressure on overworked air controllers.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia Councilmember Jamie Gauthier led a tour of Chester's waterfront on November 7 to show how burning trash harms air quality and residents' health. Her bill, set to be heard in committee later this month, would stop new contracts for trash incineration and force the city to use landfills (Chester Mayor Stefan Roots urged Philadelphia to find another way to dispose of its trash).  WHYY
  • At a Wednesday City Council hearing, Michael Blichasz of the Polish American Cultural Center claimed a handshake deal from the 1980s promised his nonprofit the public building at 308-10 Walnut St., while the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority argued there is no proof of his deal and that his group lacks the funds to properly maintain the property (citing his refusal to accept compromise offers). His case follows earlier eviction and disputed attempts by his nonprofit to reclaim the building.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Addiction Medicine & Health Advocates, which has provided methadone treatment at 928 E. Market St. since 2009, will close by year's end because its lease has ended. Community Behavioral Health is coordinating with other centers to ensure patients continue receiving care.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Joel Embiid’s bi-level penthouse in Society Hill sold for $3.6 million on Oct. 31—nearly $2 million less than its original $5.5 million listing. The 3,549-square-foot condo at 101 Walnut St. features a rooftop pool, hot tub, and Delaware River views, and it was sold as the family’s needs changed.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • The Sixers and Comcast announced plans to demolish buildings on the 1000 block of Market Street—an act that has drawn strong criticisms from preservation groups and local stakeholders who claim it jeopardizes historic design elements; Mayor Parker is expected to outline the new advisory commission on Friday in response to community concerns.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Paul George is still recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery — leaving the Sixers without his perimeter defense and shot creation — as his return remains uncertain. Teammates like Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid have stepped up after the team lost back-to-back games, increasing the need for his skill on the court.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Flyers started the season with only three regulation wins but improved with a 3—1 win against Nashville when Matvei Michkov tied the game and Noah Cates and Travis Konecny scored key goals. They return home to face the Ottawa Senators today before hosting the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday as they work to tighten their defense and control the puck better.  Metro Philadelphia
