- ➤ Philadelphia-based spoken word poet and actress Jaylene Clark Owens will release a new children's book—A Black Girl and Her Braids—on Jan. 6 via Penguin Workshop as a follow-up to her viral poem celebrating Black girlhood and the beauty of natural hair. She will also host a storytime at Barnes & Noble on Sunday, Jan. 11 and promote a Sponsorship Train to help get 5,000 copies into local kids' hands. Metro Philadelphia
- ➤ Quintessence Theatre launches its production of The Pirates of Penzance for its 16th season—its first Gilbert and Sullivan musical. The show tells a funny tale of a young pirate who finds out his birthday is delayed and runs until Jan. 4. Metro Philadelphia
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Philadelphia school principals, working without a contract for nearly three months, gathered Thursday night—demanding fair wage practices and better negotiation terms. Superintendent Tony B. Watlington said he needed more time to present a facilities plan and gather public input, while union leaders accused the district of negotiating in bad faith. The Philadelphia Inquirer

- ➤ A Delaware County apartment complex on Chester Pike in Glenolden was condemned after dangerous conditions — such as high carbon monoxide levels, a natural gas leak and a boiler issue — forced more than a dozen families to leave. - ➤ Councilman Mike Driscoll introduced a bill that would restore the Business Income Tax exemption for sole proprietorships and single-member LLCs—small businesses that lost the break this year when the city ended it. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Lifecycle Wellness and Birth Center in Bryn Mawr said it will stop delivering babies by Feb. 15—wind down all other services by late March—as financial challenges and regulatory changes have made it too difficult to continue operating. The center, which delivered 16,000 babies since 1978, will help patients transfer to other providers as it closes in early 2026. WHYY

- ➤ Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown has struggled against zone coverage this season—he has recorded career lows in yards per route and reduced catch rates compared to man coverage, and film analysis shows that changes in his route variety and alignment are key factors.
