COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Empowered CDC is opening three legal dump sites in Southwest Philadelphia to help residents dispose of household trash 24/7—each site will have two 96-gallon cans and be monitored by neighborhood ambassadors. The first site is at Elmwood and 56th Street and will be emptied every two weeks.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School opened a musical sensory garden for children with autism and other students this fall, built with a grant from String Theory Schools. The outdoor space offers musical instruments and creative areas for safe exploration+ teachers guide the students as they learn through sound.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s Logan Square is getting new sidewalks and ADA upgrades near the Swann Memorial Fountain to boost access for everyone. Construction began Monday and will last through next spring—drivers are asked to follow posted detours as multiple traffic lanes will be closed.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia City Council committee approved a bill that would let the city acquire needed land to extend Rail Park on the old Reading train line—a project that residents and park advocates have sought for over twenty years. A quarter-mile section opened in 2018, and the new legislation would let the city condemn the land if a price cannot be negotiated.  KYW Newsradio
  • Pennsylvania’s recent state budget cut funding for 14 cyber charter schools and tightened oversight rules to save public school districts about $178 million in the 2024-25 school year—lawmakers say the changes aim to balance spending while cyber charter leaders warned the reforms could force some schools to close and lead to job losses.  Spotlight PA
  • Philadelphia uses a system called the Coordinated Entry System (CES) that gives homeless people vulnerability scores from yes-no questions to match them with supportive housing. The city will face more challenges when federal funds are reduced and the rules prove hard to understand.  Metro Philadelphia

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Eagles struggled with their offense in Week 14 when they lost 24-15 to the Chicago Bears and managed only two first downs in the first half. Team leaders said they would evaluate coaching roles and work to fix the offense in the final five games — they remain confident in finding an identity.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Major League Baseball announced that the Twins and Phillies will play a regular-season game at the renovated Field of Dreams site in Dyersville (Iowa) on Aug. 13. The contest (set to air on Netflix) will be the first matchup at the reworked field following games played in 2021 and 2022.  Metro Philadelphia
