Good morning, Philadelphia. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 3rd of December.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Monday, Amazon announced its testing of Amazon Now, a fast delivery service that sends household essentials and groceries to customers in about 30 minutes in parts of Philadelphia and Seattle. Prime members pay $3.99 per order while non-Prime orders incur $13.99 and an extra $1.99 fee on orders under $15 — a move designed to challenge other delivery services.  Metro Philadelphia

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Construction has begun on a new cruise ship terminal at Tinicum Township near Philadelphia International Airport—Norwegian Cruise Line will offer 41 sailings there starting next April. PhilaPort said the 16-acre site is expected to add over 2,100 jobs and boost economic output by about $300 million, marking the first Philly-based cruises in 15 years.  KYW Newsradio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Temple and other local schools, professors banned laptops from class after studies showed students learn better taking notes by hand—some noted students distracted by activities like booking flights or gambling online. They now allow laptops only for essential academic use and for students needing accommodations.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Quinta Brunson teamed up with the School District of Philadelphia to launch a fund that will cover field trip costs for over 115,000 public school students by offering free trips to museums and historic sites. She said her own memorable school trips helped shape her future and that the fund will give students from underserved communities more chances to learn outside the classroom.  WHYY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • If you find injured, sick or orphaned wildlife in Philadelphia, call a local wildlife rehabilitation center such as the Schuylkill Center or Philadelphia Metro Wildlife Center before trying to handle the animal. Experts advise wearing gloves and using a towel method—covering and safely containing the animal—to reduce risk of disease transmission while transporting it for treatment.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SEPTA said crews will not meet the December 5 deadline to install heat sensors on Silverliner IV trains due to difficulties sourcing the necessary wire—crews expect to need another week or two to complete installations. The agency said the delay will not affect restoring normal service because 10 railcars from Maryland are arriving Friday.  KYW Newsradio
  • Pennsylvania households can apply for help with heating bills today when the state opens its LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) after a 43-day delay caused by a federal funding hold. Early applicants will receive payments in about two weeks as the program, which will serve more than 300,000 households, offers both cash and crisis grants.  WHYY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Philadelphia scientist Julie Mennella and her colleague Gary Beauchamp won a 2025 Ig Nobel Prize earlier this fall for their study on garlic-flavored breast milk that showed babies nursed longer when exposed to garlic tastes — a finding that challenges old breastfeeding myths and hints at how early flavor exposure shapes food preferences.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Eagles remained atop the NFC East at 8 to 4 after two straight losses, and coach Nick Sirianni said the team reviewed its play calls following the Black Friday loss — a comment that came as some fans reacted strongly, including vandalizing coach Kevin Patullo’s home. The team will face a tough run of games with a potential Chargers team missing its star quarterback and other challenging opponents, leaving fans hopeful for a playoff push.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • The Philadelphia 76ers beat the Wizards 121-102 Tuesday night, with Tyrese Maxey scoring 35 points in three quarters—setting a franchise record—and the team will face the Warriors at 7 p.m. Thursday.  Metro Philadelphia
