CULTURE NEWS

  • Fifty-two Philly firsts will be celebrated in weekly events starting early January 2026 as part of the 250th birthday festivities. Local artists will unveil a 5-foot sculpture each Saturday paired with live story performances — a unique nod to the city’s history and innovation in every neighborhood.  WHYY
  • Christmas Village is hosting over 120 booths (at LOVE Park, City Hall Courtyard, and North Broad) that offer festive shopping, tasty treats, and live music this holiday season for locals and visitors.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Roxborough is hosting a month-long holiday festival called Happy Holidays from ROX at Ridge Avenue and Gorgas Park now through Dec. 20. The event features a noon holiday market, a Santa appearance with the Philadelphia Fire Department at 3 p.m., and a tree lighting at 5:30 p.m. this Sunday (Dec. 6).  Metro Philadelphia

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Quinta Brunson, star of ‘Abbott Elementary’, launched a field trip fund to help 117,000 public school students visit almost 200 museums and landmarks starting this spring by partnering with the School District; she made a personal donation on Giving Tuesday + set the initiative in motion.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia City Council is advancing legislation to let restaurants open sidewalk cafes without lengthy permit waits, setting hours at 7 a.m.–10 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m.–11 p.m. weekends. If approved by Dec. 11, the rule will apply in parts of West and Southwest Philly.  Metro Philadelphia
  • SEPTA has run out of critical wire needed to install thermal sensors on its aging Silverliner railcars (a federal extension is in place), which means up to 30 cars will remain off the rails for about two weeks. The agency will borrow 10 railcars from Baltimore to help maintain service while it waits for more supplies.  WHYY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors in Philadelphia now use AI to record patient visits, allowing more time for patient care by automatically generating clinical notes. Temple Health and Penn Medicine report the tool saves doctors about an hour daily, though some still must edit the notes for consistency.  WHYY

  • Former Eagles cornerback Darius Slay left the Steelers Tuesday and now shows mutual interest in rejoining the Eagles; his return depends on waiver clearance and 20 teams passing on him.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Former Milwaukee Bucks star Michael Redd praised Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey as an 'Absolute All-Pro' on X on Dec. 3, noting his career highs (32.5 points and 7.5 assists) mark a standout season for the team.  Metro Philadelphia
