  • A new report by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund shows that Philadelphia's Chinatown gained 15% population by 2020 (with the Asian share falling from 42% to 36%) as rising rents and non-Asian business growth heighten concerns over gentrification and displacement.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • Waymo has begun autonomous testing in Philadelphia with specialists behind the wheel as part of its phased plan for a future full launch. The company announced the move on Wednesday after earlier manual test runs mapped the city’s streets.  KYW Newsradio

  • Philadelphia lights up the holiday season as the Rare Book Fair continues at Trinity Memorial Church, Hadestown plays at Forrest Theatre through Sunday, and the Philly Cookie Fest offers seasonal treats at the Bok Building on Dec. 7. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • For the past four years, 311 has received an average of 37,000 abandoned car complaints, prompting the city to streamline hazardous vehicle removals. Residents can report unregistered cars (call 216-683-9773 or use the 311 app) to help clear streets.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia officials announced the One Philly Federal Furloughed Renter Relief Program to offer a one-time $1,000 grant to eligible federal renters impacted by the shutdown — applications are open through Dec. 12 or until funds run out.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Mobile health units in Kensington must now meet new city permit rules that limit operating locations and hours (as of Dec. 1 they can only offer services like wound care at two designated sites while facing fines for violations). HEALTH NEWS

  • The nation’s top vaccine advisory panel will debate delaying the birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine on Thursday during its December meeting, a schedule that questions the Philadelphia-developed protocol for newborns & experts warn that a delay could reduce the vaccine’s effectiveness.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Free flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines remain available for residents at City Health Centers across Philadelphia following last Thursday's announcement by the Department of Public Health. Walk-in clinics offer services without appointments for those aged 6 months and older who show proof of residency.  Metro Philadelphia

  • A new study finds that historic districts have 34% higher population density and a 26% growth in housing units over the past decade compared to other areas; the report supports Mayor Parker’s H.O.M.E initiative to boost inclusive development in Philadelphia.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Sixers avoided a comeback by a shorthanded Warriors with a 99-98 win today, led by Tyrese Maxey’s 35 points and a block in the final seconds (a vital play that kept their lead intact). The team will travel to Milwaukee to face the Bucks at 8 p.m. tomorrow.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Carter will miss Monday night’s game at the Los Angeles Chargers after undergoing a procedure on both shoulders — his return remains week-to-week as teammates adjust the defensive lineup.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Flyers beat Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Wednesday night - Travis Konecny and his teammates scored key goals after a loss, and the team adjusted without Tyson Foerster, who will miss several months. They will host the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday.  Metro Philadelphia
