COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents living next to vacant Philadelphia buildings should document issues by taking photos, then submit a 311 request to the Department of Licenses and Inspections—uploading images to guide inspectors—and contact their Council member if the property shows dangerous signs.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Christina Vassallo will start as director of Philly’s Pew Center on Jan. 5, 2026, leading a major arts funder that announced $8.6M in grants to 44 local organizations. She returns to Philly after working at the Fabric Workshop and Museum, bringing expertise to boost arts programs + innovative funding models.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, Dec. 8, the School District held its 15th annual Computer Science Education Week in South Philly with an hour-long coding session at John H. Taggart School (more than 3,000 students explored coding puzzles and robotic control), which supports digital literacy improvements for over 48,000 students.  WHYY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia inked a 20-year contract with Oriden Power to purchase electricity from the planned Abes Run solar farm in Clearfield County by the end of 2026 (supplying 5% of municipal operations) while locking in a fixed price of $85.20 per MWh to support renewable energy goals.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia and surrounding counties are under Code Blue as temperatures may drop to 17 degrees from Monday night into today, prompting officials to activate extra resources for vulnerable residents — including winter clothing and heater assistance. Temperatures will rise to around 42 degrees by Wednesday.  KYW Newsradio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia have discovered a new method to enhance ovarian cancer treatment by pairing hormone therapy with a drug that resets mutant p53, leading to greater tumor shrinkage in lab models. They say clinical trials will test the promising combination for future patient care.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 76ers lost 112-108 at home to the Lakers as LeBron James sealed the win with a late steal and two baskets. The loss ended Philadelphia’s winning streak while the team will play the Indiana Pacers at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Friday, Dec. 12.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Philadelphia Eagles fell 22-19 to the Chargers Monday night as 6 turnovers, including 4 interceptions by Jalen Hurts, hurt their offense. The defense held the Chargers to 275 yards and a 7/19 third-down rate, and the team now prepares for a game with the Raiders.  Metro Philadelphia
