  • The Francis Myers Recreation Center in Kingsessing gets a $27 million makeover, adding new bleachers, a scoreboard, extra storage, a concession window and an elevator — all as part of eight projects set to finish next year.  KYW Newsradio

  • On Thursday, final pennies minted for circulation— including coins struck at the Philadelphia U.S. Mint — sold at auction for nearly $17 million, with a three-coin set topping bids at $800,000. The pieces mark the end of production following the mint’s recent cancellation.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia Ballet dancer Nicholas Patterson made his 'Nutcracker' solo debut on Friday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m. as the Cavalier with the Sugar Plum Fairy after recovering from Stage 4 cancer treatment — he will perform again on Dec. 14 at noon.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia’s Portal, a popular sculptural art screen at City Hall, is offline this Friday due to a technical glitch that disrupted its livestream. Officials expect a fix next week + visitors traveling from nearby cities hope to see the installation restored soon.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • LL Cool J — the hip-hop icon — will headline a free New Year’s Eve concert on Dec. 31 along Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Gates open at 6 p.m. and local acts DJ Jazzy Jeff, Adam Blackstone, Dorothy, and Technician the DJ will perform before the midnight fireworks display.  KYW Newsradio

  • Real estate agent Pat Fay (from Old City) recently brokered Temple deals where buyers paid nearly double the original listing prices. His involvement in over 40 transactions has raised concerns about a volatile market amid low enrollment and shifting rental demand.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 76ers (Philadelphia) will host the Pacers today at 7:00 p.m. at XFinity Mobile Arena as guard Tyrese Maxey is listed as questionable while Joel Embiid and Paul George are set to play against a team coming off two wins.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Joel Embiid led the Sixers to a 115-105 win over the Pacers on Saturday, Dec. 13, with a 39-point game after Tyrese Maxey missed the game (illness). VJ Edgecombe and Paul George added key contributions, and the team will face the Hawks in Atlanta at 6 p.m. Sunday.  Metro Philadelphia
