COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A section of the Schuylkill River Trail, closed since October due to a sinkhole near the SEPTA Bridge, reopened yesterday at about 1:30 p.m. after the Schuylkill River Development Corp and city crews filled the hole and paved the area just in time for Christmas Eve.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Termini Bros Bakery in South Philly honored its enduring Christmas Eve tradition by opening early for loyal customers, with owner Vince Termini’s sons upholding his legacy plus serving famous cannolis and Italian treats. Loyal patrons lined up hours before opening to keep this family tradition alive.  WHYY
  • Older Philadelphia women in West Oak Lane meet weekly at Simons Recreation Center to jump rope and support one another (a nod to their childhood play) as they stay fit and build community ties. The event offers a space to share stories and empower each other before the holiday break.  WHYY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews cleared rubble from a Bristol Township nursing home after a Tuesday explosion killed one resident and one employee (20 others were hospitalized) as investigators looked into a reported gas leak.  KYW Newsradio

  • Après Sip + Skate, presented by Jacquin’s, launches 21+ ice skating nights at Winterfest on Delaware River Waterfront for select Wednesdays in January and February, featuring live DJ music, curated cocktails, and treats with private rink access; guests purchase individual skate passes and rentals while Winterfest entry remains free.  Metro Philadelphia

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Memphis Street Academy Charter School, which is fighting to stay open amid a closure appeal, received a $15,000 donation from WK Kellogg Company — makers of Frosted Flakes — and Brown Family ShopRites for new sports equipment. The boost will upgrade athletic gear for its more than 400 students.  KYW Newsradio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The state DEP ordered Monroe Energy to provide bottled water to residents with private wells near its Aston tank farm after about 378,000 gallons of gasoline leaked over several months. The company must also begin an interim cleanup plan and investigation to ensure local water safety.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Restaurants in Philadelphia are gearing up for Christmas Day dining by launching special holiday menus and extended hours. Bastia (in Fishtown) is serving a $65 holiday supper and other local spots will offer festive dishes for those looking for a break from home cooking.  WHYY
  • Friends of Ridley Creek State Park will host a First Day hike on Jan. 1. The event features a 3.5-mile loop with creek views and a stop at historic Russell Cemetery (located in the park) to welcome the new year.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
